.:does the world really care?:.

for those of you that don’t know what twitter is, well, i guess all i have to say is that you probably live under a rock. however, in the interest of providing you some context, twitter is a mini social networking web app that allows you to quickly tell everyone what is going on with you right at that very moment.

for example, you could:

  • tell everyone you are on the toilet and that you just passed the gum you swallowed several days ago.
  • post about walking down the street when all of a sudden you get hit by a mack truck. you’re lying mangled in the street and your last act is to twitter about it.
  • write about how your wife is having a child right in front of you and you want to give everyone the play-by-play

how ridiculous do all of those sound? to me, pretty. damn. ridiculous. however…as ridiculous as bullet #3 might sound, that actually happened.

there’s a guy named robert scoble who is probably one of the biggest tech bloggers out there. he’s an intelligent dude and has a lot of good things to say about the general state of the world of technology. however…he decided that it’d be a good idea to go ahead and go through bullet #3.

i am of the humble opinion that i’d like to have parts of my life private, namely pretty amazing moments like the birth of your child. not that i’ve experienced that or anything, but i’m going to take a wild guess and say that it’s probably worth giving your full attention to.

at what point do you draw the line and say, ‘ef you, world…you’re not getting every piece of me’?

more importantly, at what point does it become more of a priority to describe what is going on in the moment rather than commiting yourself to being a full part of the moment?
