.:television is stupid…and yet i watch anyway:.

it has been a good long while since i’ve been so inclined to watch a television show consistently. don’t get me wrong…i like some television shows, but it’s not like i feel like i need to be glued to the set on the night that it’s on.
lost is a completely different story…
the last show that i felt i NEEDED to watch was the sopranos. i went through the first season of that like a man who hasn’t eaten in months. the second season fell the same way. when i caught up, i was glued to my TV every sunday that it was on. even though it is in it’s last season, i’m not as into it as i was…and that’s alright by me.
i don’t have the super fancy cable or satellite setup, which means i don’t have DVR either. as a matter of fact, all we have is the most basic cable you can get. we also have blockbuster online. and before that we had netflix. and we’ve used these programs not necessarily for the movies, but we’ve used them to watch some of the glorious pop-culture TV shows that we’ve missed out on.
it started with ‘oz’ and ‘nip-tuck’. oz was pretty awesome, an nip-tuck we became pretty quickly addicted to. but by the third season, we got sick of it…mainly because it was getting extremely weird, but also because it was turning into a soft porn show. then we started up ’six feet under’ and ‘the wire’. SFU was great for the first couple of seasons…and then…just like nip-tuck…we got sick of it. and the wire i just lost interest in. we tried 24, and that started off good…and then by the end of the first season, we were both completely spent. it seemed like a very massive investment. and i was having a really hard time suspending my disbelief.
then we started ‘prison break’ and ‘lost. prison break we have liked a lot, but HOLY CRAPOLA lost is addictive.
we went into it not thinking that it could be all that big of a deal. afterall, how far can you go with a bunch of people stuck on a stupid island? turns out you can go pretty damn far. i had no idea that there would be all of these supernatural/scientific/strange things going on. and the character development is literally almost endless. we burned through the first two seasons, experienced withdrawl for the first couple of days…and in our fever pitch addiction…we decided that we’d go ahead and get a season pass through iTunes. you basically pay $33.00 and you have access to any of the shows that have aired in the new season anytime you like. it’s pretty awesome. so we’ve watched the first two episodes of the third season…and our lost (i.e. television herion addiction) has now be temporarily satiated. i dread the moment when we have to watch the show on a weekly basis like all the rest of the mortals…blah.
the great thing is that it has consistently gotten stranger and stranger. i love how they expand on what you think you know at the beginning of the season, and then change your expectations entirely. like the beginning of this last season…all of the people, including ben…hanging out like normal…and then all of a sudden you find out that they are in what appears to be suburbia USA…on the island. craziness!
the acting is great, the production quality is top notch, the music is perfect…there hasn’t been a tv show this good since…well…since the sopranos.
if you haven’t watched lost…you should. and you’ll ask the question the even leonidas asks….

Agreed. We watched seasons 1 and 2, and the first few episodes of season 3 in a matter of a few weeks on DVD. We ended up watching 2 or 3 episodes every time, never able to stop after just one show. Waiting for a week between episodes hasn’t sucked as bad as I thought it would. I agree its the best show since The Sopranos, but overall I don’t think I can say its better. I also think these remaining Sopranos episodes are gonna rock. Lots o’ people dyin’ I think.
Nobody fucks with John Locke. NOBODY. And I could pretty much listen to Desmond talk for hours and do nothing else. If someone didn’t turn off the TV I would die of dehydration and starvation.
Ok. Lost is going into my queue. Productivity be damned.
Just started season 1 of 24. I’m dead.
I have to say that Entourage is pretty addictive too. The writing is just amazing. Ari Gould might be one of the best TV characters ever created.
Another series of banter between Ari and Eric and turle with a love interest at last!
